Things to do & see

CLIMB MOUNT WARNING

  • Be the first in Australia to see the Sunrise. Conquer the 8.8km strenuous return trek to the 1157 metre summit of the second largest volcanic Caldera in the world
  • The track is a steep 8.8 kilometre return trip. Winding upwards from the Breakfast Creek parking area the Mount Warning summit track passes through a variety of vegetation communities. Subtropical and temperate rainforest, wet sclerophyll forest and heath shrubland are all encountered in your journey upward. With a challenging rock scramble at the end you emerge to 360 degrees views reaching every distant horizon.
  • Mount Warning Climbers Certificates available at the Park.

As an alternative enjoy a shorter walk catering for the less energetic. The Lyrebird Track crosses Breakfast Creek before winding some 200m through palm forest to a platform set amongst the lush tropical rainforest. Or picnic at Korrumbyn picnic area.

    Useful information:
  • Toilets are available only at the start of the walk.
  • Suitable footwear should be worn.
  • Temperature drops rapidly as you ascend.
  • Carry your own water and refreshments.
  • Take all your litter away with you.
  • Keep to the track - short cuts cause erosion.
  • Camping and fires are not permitted.

VISIT THE BORDER RANGES NATIONAL PARK

In particular
  • The Pinnacle Lookout (a must on a clear day) is reached by a short walk through moss-hung rainforest. The view from this lofty peak uplifts as it embraces one of the largest erosion calderas in the world.)
  • Blackbutts Lookout Picnic Area - situated high on the caldera rim, has panoramic views of the caldera and Mount Warning. Have a picnic surrounded by old blackbutt trees and take in the views of Mount Warning and the Tweed Valley.
  • Palm Forest Walk

VISIT THE NIGHTCAP NATIONAL PARK

World Heritage-listed Nightcap National Park is situated at the southern rim of the 23 million year old Mt Warning volcano. This is one of the best developed subtropical rainforests in the state and is part of the CERRA group - Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves of Australia.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED

  • Minyon Falls - These beautiful falls plunge 104 metres into the deep palm-shaded gorge below. The top of the cliffs is forested with Blackbutt and Scribbly Gum while subtropical Booyong Rainforest and Brush Box occupy the gully beneath. Toilets and picnic/barbecue facilities are provided.
  • Protester Falls - To view the falls walk 700 metres, 15 minutes, through bangalow palm forests and over pristine creeks. The easy walk winds its way to the base of Protestors Falls at Terania Creek Picnic Area.
  • Rocky Creek Dam - One feature at the dam is the Platypus walk Djanbung Gurahr. The platypus walk takes about 45 minutes and traverses across the dam wall, over the spillway, through rainforest and over the floating bridge.

The Rocky Creek dam has multiple areas where you can spread out your rug, play cricket and cook a BBQ but then there's the small pockets of rainforest for a good poke around to get in touch with our environment.
